BLOOD TESTING PROCEDURES


BEFORE BEGINNING :

  1. WASH HANDS

  2. USE ALCOHOL AND COTTON SWAB

  3. USE RUBBER GLOVE TO " STICK " LAB PARTNER

  4. COLLECT YOUR OWN BLOOD

  5. IF A SECOND STICK IS NEEDED, USE A NEW LANCET

  6. PLACE ALL WASTE IN INDICATED CONTAINER

  7. TAKE YOUR TIME, DON'T RUSH THE PROCEDURE

  8. ANY SPILLS SHOULD BE CLEANED UP IMMEDIATELY !


***** COLLECT BLOOD FOR ALL TESTS AT THE SAME TIME *****


TEST 1 HEMOGLOBIN :

  1. 1. MAKE STICK

  2. 2. USE PAPER PROVIDED AND SOAK BLOOD ON PAPER

  3. 3. WHEN BLOOD LOSES SHEEN ON PAPER - MAKE CHART COMPARISON

  4. 4. INTERPRET FINDINGS

TEST 2 HEMATOCRIT

  1. USE HEPARINIZED CAPILLARY TUBE ( RED RING )

  2. COLLECT BLOOD IN TUBE - ANY AMOUNT

  3. SEAL ONE END WITH CLAY

  4. CENTRIFUGE 5 MINUTES

  5. PLACE IN HEMATOCRIT SCALE

  6. ALIGN WITH THE RED BLOOD CELLS ( PACKED CELL VOLUME )

  7. MAKE INTERPRETATION


TEST 3 CLOTTING TIME


  1. COLLECT BLOOD

  2. AT 3, 5, 7 MINUTE INTERVALS CAREFULLY BREAK TUBE

  3. LOOK FOR CLOT ( FIBROUS BLOOD )

  4. IF BLOOD FLOWS IT IS NOT CLOTTED


TEST 4 WBC DETERMINATION


  1. USE SMALL DILUTION CHAMBER ( BLUE # 25 )

  2. COLLECT BLOOD - NO BUBBLES

  3. DO NOT OVERFILL CHAMBER - FILL ONLY CAPILLARY TUBE

  4. INTRODUCE BLOOD INTO THE MIXING CHAMBER

  5. GENTLY SHAKE

  6. SQUEEZE MIXTURE INTO THE COUNTING CHAMBER

  7. USE LOW POWER MICROSCOPE

  8. COUNT ALL CELLS IN WHITE GRID ( 16 BOXES )

  9. COUNT CELLS THAT ARE IN ONLY 2 OUTSIDE LINES ON THE 4 LINES THAT ARE PRESENT.

  10. COUNT ALL FOUR BOXES

  11. TAKE ROW COUNT X 50 = WBC NUMBER PER CU MM

RED BLOOD CELL :

  1. USE LARGE CHAMBER ( YELLOW # 20 )

  2. USE SAME PROCEDURE FOR WBC DETERMINATION

  3. USE LOW POWER MICROSCOPE

  4. COUNT FOUR CORNER AND MIDDLE BOXES

  5. COUNT ALL CELLS IN 2 OF FOUR LINES OUTSIDE THE TRIPLE LINE

  6. TAKE ROW COUNT X 125 = RBC NUMBER PER CU MM

    ***CLEAN UP ALL MATERIALS AND DISINFECT TABLE***

    ***WASH HANDS***
