Welcome to my Microbiology page.
Microbiology is offered face-to-face, as a hybrid class and online. At the beginning of each semester/session, I post (in WebCt online classes) available lab days and times for students to perform lab activities.
ONLINE:
A. Chapter tests will be taken online. These will be
accesses through WebCt. Look for these as they are posted. You should also use
the Course Calendar and WebCt Calendar as a guide. There should be links to the
tests and quizzes from the Weeks area. The Weeks can be accessed from the
Course Menu in WebCt.
B. There will be 9 lab quizzes
worth varying points. Material covered in lab manual will prepare you for
these. Look in your lab manual for the titles that match the quiz titles.
C.
There will be a lab practical near the end of the semester that includes fungi,
protozoa, and parasitic worms.
This lab practical will be approximately 40 points.
D. The
instructor will meet 2-4 times with each student during the semester to
complete the lab portion of the class. This work will be worth 200 points.
E. There will be a comprehensive final exam.
You will have one attempt to
complete the test. One may take this test after March 6.
The
questions in the final exam will be taken from the chapter tests and lab
quizzes.
The
test is due Friday, May 8, 11:55 P.M. I will
keep the quiz open until May 11 to take into account technical issues.
You have 3 hours to complete the test. Most should finish in two hours
or less. I am giving students an extra hour. There
are 160 -170 questions. The questions will be
pulled from the chapter tests. If you have mastered the questions from the
chapter tests, you should do well on the final exam. The best way to study for
the final exam is to go back and know every question and answer on the chapter
tests.
You
are responsible for contacting the Success Center or an Education center to
schedule a time to take the test. Schedule a time at least three hours before
the center closes.
You
will not be allowed to use your book, lab manual, notes, or any supplementary
materials during the test. You cell phone(s) will be shut off and should not be
seen during the test. Any other communication devise is not allowed. You are
not to communicate with any other person except the proctor during the test.
You will need to contact the
education center you will be using as soon as possible to make arrangements for
the exam.
If you cannot meet at an education center or on the main campus contact me as
soon as possible.
Your choices are:
Greenville - contact Jerri Davenport at 618-664-9394
Nashville - contact Jennifer Craft at 618-327-9136
Salem - contact Sharon Fey at 618-548-9001
Trenton - contact Arlene Covington at 618-224-2666
Vandalia - contact Mary Schulze at 618-283-1780
Main Campus - contact Sandra Neabuhr at 618-545-3157
Each site has different hours of operation. You will need to allow three hours
for the final exam.
If you need to take the exam on the main campus after 5 pm, contact through
WebCt mail to arrange a time slot.
Thanks for your cooperation in setting up times and locations as soon as
possible.
Please be aware that the Final Exam due date will be approaching. You are now
required by the proctoring sites to make an appointment to take any exam.
Please do so as soon as possible. You should call the site (or if you are there
in person, ask) to obtain their hours when testing can take place. Students
will no longer be allowed to simply show up and request an exam.
NO Appointment = NO exam.
You must show a photo id to take any exam as well.
The online Microbiology class does include a lab
component. The student may meet with me to perform lab
activities or may opt to work in a pathology lab. If
choosing to work in the pathology lab, the student will
want to contact the instructor to determine the activities.
Face-to Face:
Grades will be based on the following:
A. If a
student misses a test or quiz, the nature of the make-up quiz or test may
change. Be ready for essay! The student should make arrangements
to make up the test within two classes of the returning
date.
B. Points will be given for lab
work. I give five (5) points for each lab check-off. The check-offs are
approximately 75 points. The check-offs are given when a student demonstrates
proficiency in a lab task: use of
microscope, identifying microbes, understanding their characteristics, etc.
C.
There will be two or three lab quizzes worth twenty (20) points each. Material
covered in lab will prepare you for
these.
D.
There will be a lab practical near the end of the semester that includes fungi,
protozoa, and parasitic worms. This
lab practical will be approximately 40 - 45 points.
E. A
bacterial unknown will be given to each student. Procedures learned in lab will
be used to identify its
characteristics. You are not required to name the bacterium. This project will
be 100 points.
F.
Three unit tests will be given during the semester.
G. A final exam will be given
during finals week. Most of the information to be tested will be over the last
month of the semester. This will be worth between 125 and 150 points.
